The job market is in constant flux. Between the AI revolution, layoffs, and whispers of recession, the future of job searching feels a bit…unpredictable. (To put it lightly!!)
In a job marketplace full of uncertainty, here’s what I know for sure: hitting Easy Apply on LinkedIn a few hundred times a week won’t land you your next job. And submitting one perfectly crafted online application a day probably won’t either.
So: If you want a new job in the next year, you’ve got to approach it differently. As a career coach who helps clients find their passion and land their dream job, here are my top five tips for job seekers who want a new position ASAP.

1. Find what you care about.
Making a career change without figuring out what lights you up is like setting out on a road trip to a new place without Google Maps. Girl, where are you even GOING?
Before you start applying, open a document (or a notebook) and journal your answers to these questions:
What have been your happiest moments at work?
What do you care most about?
How do you want to make people feel?
What have other people told you you’re really good at?
When you identify the why behind your next move—whether it’s to make more money to support your passions, or to work in a field that aligns with your values— you’ll feel more confident about where you’re headed.
2. Expect the unexpected.
Let’s face it: the world is changing rapidly, and we can’t predict what’s coming next. Industries are evolving, roles are shifting, and the skills that matter today might look different tomorrow.
While your hard skills still matter, your ability to adapt and collaborate matters more. Stay open to possibilities and be ready to change, because when you embrace the unknown, you’ll be better equipped to thrive no matter what the job market throws your way.
3. Diversify your strategy.
Applying online isn’t enough anymore. Period. Yes, even if you’re thoughtfully applying to multiple jobs per day.
Instead, for every two applications you submit, ask yourself:
Who are two people I could reach out to in this industry?
Who could I ask for help in making new connections?
What’s one event I could attend to meet people in the field?
Opportunities most often come from conversations, not applications. Diversify how you approach your job search, and the connections you nurture will inevitably think of you and recommend you for positions.

4. Focus on relationships.
Let’s address the big question: If you’re going to get hired, who's going to hire you? (It’s going to be a person, not a LinkedIn or Indeed robot.)
Building relationships is the most important thing you can do to increase your chances of getting hired. But where do you start? Connecting with everyone you possibly can on LinkedIn? Not quite.
Here are ways to build professional relationships:
Reconnect with former classmates or colleagues.
Join a local or online group for people who work in your field.
Engage with posts from people in your industry and community on LinkedIn.
Attend networking events and conferences.
Reach out to professionals you look up to for a 15-minute advice call.
People hire people they trust, so invest in building those relationships now by asking for advice from professionals you look up to. (Not sure how to network? Read this!)
5. Invest in yourself.
Let me tell you something hard but true: A new job will not change everything about your life. At the end of the day, you’ll still be YOU, just in a new role.
So if you’re dealing with anxiety about performing well at work, people-pleasing, or a feeling of doom and uncertainty…none of those things will disappear just because you get a new job. NOW is the time to take care of your most important asset: YOU.
Here are a few quick, effective ways to refuel yourself:
Prioritize movement that makes you feel good.
Spend time journaling and reflecting.
Surround yourself with friends who uplift you.
Find a therapist who can help you navigate what’s holding you back.
Invest in a career coach who can guide you step-by-step to your next job.
When you pour energy and effort into yourself, you’re not just preparing for your next job—you’re preparing for a future where you show up as your best self. And your best self is who will sign that offer letter.
Cheering you on!
