How to overcome doubt and build confidence

Do you ever feel like you have two voices in your head?

In career coaching, two voices often surface when someone is thinking about doing something new.

There's one voice that’s confident, knows its worth, and has big dreams.

And another voice that’s terrified, anxious, and won’t let you move forward.

If you’re at a crossroads and your mind is arguing with itself, here’s what you need to do.

Give the two voices names.

Maybe they’re Confidence and Doubt. Maybe they’re Trust and Anxiety. Maybe they’re Motivated and Skeptical. Give each voice a name then write each name on a piece of paper.

Pick one to start with then imagine it speaking to you.

Take Confidence, to start. If Confidence were a person or a character, what would it say to you? What is it asking you to do? What stories is it telling you? What is it trying to push you toward?

Then, allow the other voice to take a turn.

If Doubt were a person or a character, what would it be saying to you? What is it asking you to do? What stories is it telling you? What is it trying to protect you from?

Introduce the two voices to each other.

For example... What does Confidence want to say to Doubt? What does it wish Doubt understood? Now, what does Doubt want to say to Confidence? What does it wish Confidence understood?

Give thanks.

Wrap up the conversation by taking a moment to thank both voices for how they are trying to help you. And then, choose whose voice sounds most like yours as you move forward.
