Eric's Story: How Career Coaching Helped Him Pivot from Confusion to Clarity

As a career coach, I often work with professionals at different crossroads in their careers.

One of the most rewarding parts of my work is witnessing the transformation that occurs when someone commits to change, seeks guidance, and starts to believe in their own potential.

With Eric, we found ourselves looking at an uncertain, unpaved road ahead. Thanks to our partnership, that path turned into a yellow brick road full of career opportunity as he pivoted at age 42.

Before Coaching: A Career Pivot in Crisis

When Eric first reached out to me, he identified himself as a “Pivoter”—a term we use to describe professionals who are navigating personal setbacks or recovering from major career roadblocks.

Eric had been struggling to find a clear direction in his career shift, and as he put it, his situation felt like "a table of puzzle pieces with no picture on the box."

One of the primary challenges Eric faced was organization. Knowing that he wanted to change careers was one thing, but figuring out how to map out the steps and execute the plan was entirely different.

He also struggled with confidence, particularly in his ability to make such a significant shift at 42. The age factor weighed heavily on him, making the transition feel even more daunting.

During Coaching: The “Yellow Brick Road” to Success

Over the course of six sessions, we worked together to align Eric's career goals with actionable steps. Eric’s metaphor of puzzle pieces began to shift; the once scattered pieces started coming together to reveal a clear path—a “yellow brick road,” as we called it, toward his career success.

Through coaching, Eric’s confidence grew. He began to believe in his own potential, expressing his passion more openly, and gaining the tools he needed to showcase his unique value to recruiters.

Together, we tackled the phases of career transition, from resume building and networking to interview preparation and goal-setting. Eric’s story is a testament to the fact that clarity comes with confidence, and confidence comes from having a solid, well-organized plan.

After Coaching: A Message to Other Pivoters

Though Eric is still in the process of landing his new role, the progress he’s made is undeniable.

One of the most important shifts has been in his networking. With newfound confidence, Eric has built meaningful relationships on LinkedIn, connecting with industry professionals and recruiters. His visibility in his desired career field has significantly increased, and he’s now getting the attention from recruiters that once felt out of reach.

For anyone on the fence about investing in career coaching, Eric’s advice is simple: “Get off the fence and book your first session!”

He emphasizes that the structure and organization I provided helped him not only clarify his goals but also realize his potential. As Eric put it, my ability to organize his thoughts into a cohesive career plan is something he wishes he could emulate.

If you find yourself in a similar position—overwhelmed by the idea of a career change, unsure of where to start, or lacking confidence in your abilities—know that you’re not alone. Like Eric, you have the potential to unlock new opportunities and chart your course. Sometimes, all it takes is a coach to help you find the path.

Are you ready to take the first step on your own “yellow brick road” to success? Let’s start putting the pieces of your career puzzle together.
