Applying to a job = Entering the lottery.
Let that sink in for a second...
In 99% of talks with clients, I hear the same thing: "I'm just waiting to hear back on my job application."
Thing is: When you submit a resume, you’re essentially completing a scratch off lottery ticket with the hopes of being selected as the lucky winner.
Instead of mass applying and perfecting your resume, I challenge you to pivot your search to focus on creating relationships with humans (a.k.a. networking) versus waiting on bots.
Most if not all job applications are filtered by bots and algorithms, so it’s essentially like entering a lottery system. You’ll have better luck going straight to the people.
Think about it: how many of your previous jobs did you get because you know someone at the company vs. from hitting “Easy Apply"?
If you decide to take this approach, I encourage 70% of your job search spent networking and 10% on applying. So, for every one quality application, balance it with 6-7 touch points with professionals in your network.
And remember: Networking doesn’t have to look like networking events and walking into rooms of strangers.
It can be grabbing coffee with a former coworker, commenting on LinkedIn posts, asking to have a Zoom call with someone who works for a company you’re interested in, or sending emails to hiring managers.
