Getting laid off can be one of the most unexpected and unsettling changes your career can take. Take me, for example...
In 2020, I was laid off from my dream job at Walt Disney World. And guess what?
My life didn’t end.
Even though I had dreamed of working at Disney since I was a kid.
Even though I expected to be there for 40 years.
Even though I loved my work.
Thanks to this sudden change, I learned two valuable lessons.
You can't live for the "dream job."
Here's the thing: there is no dream job because there is no role, title or positions that will satisfy you completely and last your whole life.
Since 2020, I’ve started my own coaching business helping professionals make smooth career transitions. I got married. I became a mom. I bought a home. I wouldn’t go back to my old job even if I had the opportunity.
Why?
Because my life now is even better than my just-laid-off self could imagine. Helping professionals land jobs and develop in their career was my favorite part of my job at Disney. And for right now, it’s my whole job.
What fulfills you will change throughout the course of your life.
There's really not much more to it other than this: your life's mission is going to evolve. Your purpose is going to evolve, and when something ends, new opportunities will emerge that you can’t even imagine right now. And that is a beautiful thing.
At the end of the day, your career is constantly evolving and the unexpected will at some point. If you’re struggling to feel secure about job transitions, allow a career coach like me to help.
