If you’ve ever spent hours scrolling through job postings on LinkedIn or Indeed only to come away feeling uninspired, join the freaking club!
That sinking feeling of “none of these jobs sound right” might not be about the job market at all—it’s likely about your approach.
Truth is: You’ve probably jumped into action mode too quickly without doing the critical self-exploration needed to steer your search in the right, most meaningful direction.
If this sounds like you and you’re tired of mindless job-scrolling, take these 4 steps:
Step 1: Figure out what you value
Before you dive headfirst into applications, you need to understand yourself on a deeper level (aka actually DO the self exploration work).
This means taking the time to figure out:
What do you truly value?
What mission are you on?
What do you want to be known for?
When are you happiest?
What do you genuinely care about?
List your answers from these questions to see a birds-eye snapshot that defines who you are and what you care about.
(P.S. Don’t overthink it—just let your ideas flow. These might include personal values, work preferences, career goals, and life aspirations.)
When you can answer these questions, your job search stops being about “what’s available” and becomes about “what aligns with me.”
Step 2: Refine with AI
Once you have your list, allow technology give you a boost.
Paste your list into ChatGPT and prompt it to organize your ideas into your core values (I recommend 5 values max for simplicity).
For example, you can ask: "Based on this list, what are my five core values?"
From there, take it one step further. Ask ChatGPT:"Based on these values and my experience in [your industry/role], what career paths should I consider?"
Pay attention to how you feel when new ideas emerge. Which suggestions spark your interest? Which ones feel like they align with your vision for the future? Capture them on paper and let them simmer.
Step 3: Seek Expert Guidance
Now that you’ve done some self-reflection and narrowed down your values, it’s time to get professional support.
Working with a career coach (like me!) can help you clarify your next steps by using your new value statements to tailor your applications, refine your job search criteria, and stay accountable to your goals.
Step 4: Apply Strategically
Armed with a clear understanding of your values, mission, and ideal career paths, you’re ready to start applying.
My biggest advice here: Do NOT fall into the old habit of mass-applying to anything that “might” fit.
Instead, keep your value statements close and reference back each time you find a new posting. Ask “How does this (job/company/position) align or not with my value of __?”
At the end of the application day, it’s about intentionally applying to roles that resonate with your values and excite you.
